Trudeau Ends Controversial Emergencies Act Two Days After Month Extension
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revoked the controversial Emergencies Act just two days after extending the power for a month – with an inquiry into its use set to begin shortly.
On Wednesday, local time, Mr Trudeau revoked the state of emergency and announced an inquiry behind its use would start within 60 days.
He defended the Emergencies Act as “compliant” with Canada’s Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.
The emergency powers included the ability to freeze the accounts of those suspected of supporting the Freedom Convoy blockades, without obtaining a court order.
